Need help setting up a modem

Hello All,

I was just wondering if anyone can help me to set up a U.SRobotic modem. I want to set it up in a RS600 p630 machine. Can anyone guide me or give me some hints where I should start? I just want to be able to dial-in for support reasons.

Hi ,

1. connect modem to a serial port on server normally 9pin to 25 pin

2. smitty dev
add a tty to create device for serial port select the port where your modem is connected to

3. edit/add /etc/uucp/Devices so that you can connect to the modem port.
e.g. Direct tty1 - 19200 direct

4. before you enable the port us cu to check if you can
connect to the modem

i.e. cu -l /dev/tty1

type at
at&f
you should get o.k back

if you don't then could be problem with port settings, modem settings

otherwise

5. you probably have to program the modem so that it auto answers , have dtr set . You will find this in the modem manual something like at&f&aetc...&w
do this when you cu -l /dev/tty1
use ~. to disconnect

6. You then must have a getty running on the port
enable tty1 or via smit dev and tty1 enable login

7. Then try dialing the modem number form your pc with a modem attached and see if you can connect and get a login prompt.


Hope that helps , or give you some idea , as modems are a pain to setup.

Thanks for your help. I am still having problems configuring the modem. I got the modem to respond to at commands but, I cannot get it to pick up. It just rings and rings. I check the modem manuals and I think I am doing everything they suggest. Any other tips anyone?

hi ,

have you programmed modem to have auto answer on
and dtr set high ?
is a getty running on the modem port?
can you dial out when you have cu to the modem i.e. your own phone number

( what lights are ON , on the modem)
