That site is frightening at times....)

I read a story recently about how crackers are using google to attack unprotected web sites. They do an amazing thing: search on "Index of \.", which will show which sites are missing a index.htm.

It's definitley the best search tool on the web so i suppose it could become a good cracking tool.

What's the security significance of not having a page named "index.htm"?

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....

It means that your site shows up as a directory tree, and it becomes much easier for people to go places you didn't intend them to. For example, if you are working on v2.0 of your site in a folder called "NewSite", but never put any permissions on the directory, then people can look over your shoulder as you work. In *really* bad cases, they can replace your site's code with their own.

Chip, how do you view a site this way? I have been unable to do it with my intranet. (I'm only a neophyte webmaster.) I know our website doesn't have this page either. I would like to use my intranet to demostrate the vulnerability to our parent co.

I should note that in some cases the default webpage has been changed to something other than index.htm (which you can do on IIS, I don't know about *nix. I'd be surprised if the directory viewing hole would still be there in that case, can anyone say for sure?
