I have two queries about SCO open server :-

1. I go to tmp directory and if I give "l" command , I get the output as:-

sr--r--r-- 1 root sys 0 Dec. 14, 2000 00576dos

what does the first "s" signify?

2. How the size of a directory varies? Like we have et directory in the root filesystem showing:-

drwxr-xr-x 25 bin auth 7680 Dec.14,2000 etc

We deleted all the subdirectories under etc directory. The "l" listing showed exactly the same (the only difference being the changing number of links). But the "size" remained the same. After that we deleted ALL files too. Still the "l" listing showed the same "Size" of the directory.

Thanks In Advance

In reply to:

1. s indicates a semaphore (see man semaphore).

2. As far as I'm aware, the size of a 'directory' entry doesn't decrease automatically if the files within it are erased. You'd need to delete the directory and re-create it to release the space/inodes within it.

HTH.
