Using external ports on RAID cards is flaky at the best of times, even when it supposedly supports external tape devices - just buy a dedicated card for it - it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

the tape drive is an Ultrium 230 which can transfer data with a maximum speed of 30MB/sec.
As vschumpy mentioned it is not advised to use a RAID controller's external connector for tape drives.
Take an Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI controller (160MB/sec) for this tape drive. The only thing you need to know is which kind of SCSI connector is on the cable that comes with the tape drive.
This should be a 68-pins 'wide' connector or a so called 68-pins VHDCI. Maybe the cable has both connectors. Match the Adaptec's 29160 external connector to the cables.
On the internet is plenty information about how these connectors look like.

regards
