I have a Dell 2400 and I know I need to upgrade my memory (256) but I also need a new video card that I wont have to starve my kids to buy (less than 300 is what I am shooting for). With so many out there what would be the best for me to play games such as Breed and Doom 3

Tom's Hardware Guide has an excellent guide:
THG Graphics Card Buyers Guide at

In my opinion the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb is the best bang for the buck and can be found for around $200.
Most new 9800 Pros can be converted into a 9800 XT by flashing the video Bios.

Slightly older but very capable:
ATI Radeon 9800pro 128mb
Nvidia FX5900XT 128mb or ultra

If your motherboard would support one:

Nvidia 6800 , just the plain 128mb version with 2.2ns memory.
325/700 core/clock I think, but these plain vanilla 6800's are half the price of the GT, with better performance than last generations top GPU's

I don't know how old is your Dell, but check if it supports AGP 4X and 8X, and make sure that the graphics card supports the same format. This will avoid many problems.
