Need help cutting text

An instructor of mine once showed me this trick in Illustrator where she was able to basically cut text in half and treat them as separate objects, allowing their shape to be changed. I've since forgotten how she did it, but i need to find a way to do it again for a current project of mine. I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions to recreating that effect.
 

...one option:

...type text, choose type > create outlines...

...draw a rectangle on top covering half the height of the text...

...select both rectangle and text, pathfinder palette choose divide button...

...with the direct select tool, clean up the bits you don't need that are left over..

...is to create outlined text, draw box above text, select the BOX ONLY and then choose object > patch > divide objects below...

...to add, option two is obviously the better option as it requires less clean up...

...just noticed a small typo above:

object > [patch] > divide objects below

it should read:

"object > [path] > divide objects below
