I need some help in resolving an issue with connecting a Linksys WAP54G Wireless AP to a Motorola Surfboard SB5100.
According to the documentation both the USB and the ethernet connection are valid.
I should be able connect a computer thru the USB to the SB5100, and also connect up to 32 computers thru the ethernet (rj45)connection, this is according to Motorola's web site.
I can see the connection on the wirless card on my notebook, however, no internet connection. I am using Time Warner Road Runner service.

Any comments, suggestions and help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

. disable DHCP on the WAP54G
. give the WAP54G a non-conflicting static IP to the router in your modem. Try 192.168.1.2

Now the hard part. If you intend to use both the USB port and the ethernet port (for the WAP54G) your ISP may not allow this. Only if the ISP supports the modem (they handle the firmware after all) and offers it to you as a valid option can both the ethernet and USB port be used at the same time.

Usually, the config file dictates whether or not both can be used simultaneously. If your ISP allows it (they often ask you to pay a little more monthly), then yes, the 5100 will support 2 connections at the same time as you planned.

This is not an issue of the capabilities of your modem, but an ISP issue.

bcastner,
I'll try your suggestion.

The wap54g does not have any dhcp service. It is just a passthrough device.I would not recommend that kind of setup.

Use a router instead.

Just out of curiosity have you called Motorola. The reason for asking, I have a friend with the same modem. I went over to there house to setup there network. I got there they were using the USB connection and not the erthernet port. When I went to switch the connection it would not see the port on the modem. I know this is not your situation, but have you had any problems switching back and forth. Please let me know when you get a chance.

yes to AdamBCohen,
I had lengthy conversations with both Motorola and Linksys. According to Motorola you can use both USB and Ethernet IF your ISP wants you to. There is a config file where your ISP can set that option. To your problem to change from USB to Ethernet, first; disconnect from ISP, second; remove power cord for 60 seconds reconnect power cord, reconnect ISP coax, plug you (computer into the RJ45) You might need to use a crossover,I did for the WAP54G.

kennz,
Not True
The Linksys WAP54G is a Wireless Access Point That is configurable thru a web interface, It does hav DHCP options.
After 5 calls to Linksys Tech support I finaaly got a techie that actually knew something and helped me reconfigure properly, all works now.

bcastner,

thank you for your help, The ISP does indeed control access to the Motorola SB5100, according to Motorola, all the ISP has to do is make a change in the config file that only they (ISP) has access to, both ports can be active or not.

So since Time Warner isn't going give access or change it without a price, I guess we just limp along.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and input.

Hi kshugart,

"The Linksys WAP54G is a Wireless Access Point That is configurable thru a web interface, It does hav DHCP options.

What do you mean with "works properly"..
Can you explain it?

I have a big problem....
I cannot access the Web-based wizard for the AP if I'm connected to the internet.. I run WIN 2K and have a Motorola SB 4100 on a dynamic IP address.
If I want to change something in WAP54G I have to change to a static IP address 192.168.1.5 in TCP/IP to do that.
Linksys said I cannot access the AP if I'm connected to the internet, by typing 192.168.1.245 in the browser.
Any help?

Bimbobo,

What you describe is pretty much the state of affairs.
For the earlier series of Linksys APs there were available, not from Linksys, an SNMP .MIB file one could use, and then use SNMP to access the AP.

But I have not seen a hack such as this for the AP in question.

Bimbobo,
What I meant is correct. The Linksys Tech helped me re configure the Access point to link properly with the SB5100.

To access the WAP54G in a browser, try this address: 192.168.1.245
This is the factory default. I have had no problem with that.
