I am at a location where I can't get DSL or anything else. The only possible thing I could get is Cable. The Cable company can't give me a static IP that never changes. Is it possible to setup a VPN even with this??
. There are others, do a search for 'dynamic dns'.
On another note, even though your cable provider will not assign you a static IP (I suspect they would, given the proper motivation $$, there is no technical reason they couldn't), many companies do not force a change, so if you have a machine on at all times you can often have the same IP for a long period of time. My address at home hasn't changed in over a year.
Thanks for the info. I was aware of services that searched for a dynamic dns but wasn't sure about the security of that. This is a medical supply company and is very regulated.
As for the Cable, it is Comcast and just recently they said they don't do Static all of the sudden and no matter of motivation could persuade them to do otherwise.
Dynamic DNS should not be a big security issue. The fact that you use the service would be an indication that you are running some kind of server and might prompt some probing, but if you are properly firewalled it shouldn't make a real difference.
Sorry about your luck (having to deal with Comcast, I mean). I am sure I have done fixed IP with them before, but that situation might change from time to time and differ area to area.
They used to do Static IP until recently. They underwent some reconstruction in the way they do business and their internet. I battled with them for a good while over it about 3 weeks ago.
