My customer is moving and I need to back-up his 8X24-DS system. He has an old RAD NT8B80 that he got with the system that he's never used. I have read many many threads here but I'm having a hard time compiling definitive information.

To perform a back-up I have several questions: 1) Is the RAD just connected to an extension port; does the port need to be configured? (I intend to direct connect via serial connection) 2) From what I have researched it seems I need NRU version 8 or 9 (version 10 does not work wih the old systems). Is this correct or is it an earlier version? 3) Any sources for NRU 8 or 9 (or the NRU I need) for this move would be appreciated. Many Thanks!

A backup cannot be done on an 8x24, the backup and resore was not introduced til MICS 2.0. You'll have to reprogram from scratch if you lose your programming.

A backup is done with Norstar Manager. Version 3.7 was the last version I am aware of and it can backup early versions of MICS. I backup a few 8x24's.

Rob,
I checked my compatability matrix on this one and it doesn't list any version of the NRU (backup/restore version) for the 8x24. Are you saying you've successfully backed up and restored to an 8x24?

My favorite subject.

You need Norstar Manager.
Some background: Norstar Manager 3.5 was the last one that I am aware of that worked. It shipped with NRU 9.0. Maybe there was a 3.7, but I never needed it.
With the release of NRU 10.0, they quit shipping NM.
If you are running on a W2000 or XP machine use NM 3.5
If you are running on a Win95 or Win98 machine, you have a lot more choices. Any of the older versions of NM will work for you.
The VERY BEST NORSTAR MANAGER was actually 2.0. With that old version, you could actually do a system backup, and then get into the backup file and do reports audits etc. from it without having to stay connected to the KSU. I am still heart broken that Nortel never put the bells and whistles back in after that. You could even do automatic system audits to tell you exactly how many of which model of phones you had. The old RAD you have will work just fine, and yes, you can backup 8x24's and 6x16's and 3x8's.
I'm almost in tears thinking about the old 2.0 Norstar Manager.

I currently use NM 2.0 and NM 3.3 on a Win95 machine that is dedicated to this purpose.
I also run NM 3.5 and NRU 10.0 on my XP machine. That way, I am covered for all Norstar systems to date that supports RADs

Correction/Addition, Some KSU's software support RADs for the REMOTE SET TOOL only. Your 8x24 must be DR-5 Rls.04 or better.
After that, the only other system that could not be backed up and restored was CICS 1.0.
Your old RAD has a 25 pin connector, Right?
If you do a direct connect, you will not have to supply the 24vdc power to it. that used to cause a lot of confusion.
When you access the RAD programming, you only have 6 seconds to get the access code in.
Fun stuff.

What he didn't say is that backing up an 8X24 (with the correct release of DR5) is slower than watching paint dry.
