I'm trying to apply a gradient to a photo, but am getting nowhere.

When I put a gradient on a black box, for instance, I just draw the box, grab the gradient tool, click and drag across the box, ans Voila! I have a box with a gradient fill!

But this process does not work with photos. What I want is a photo that gradually fades out toward the bottom.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Joe

This would ideally be done in Photoshop but you can still pull it off in InDesign by making a black-white gradient box on top of a photo frame. Then experiment with the different transparency modes in the transparency palette.

Thanks for the suggestion, but a gradient gray box overlay, isn't really the look I was going for.

I want a photo that "fades to white" at the edges of the photo.

Perhaps it would be best to do this in Photoshop.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestion, Picklefish.

I really only want the "fade out" on one side of the photo and feathering fades all four sides...

But! Your suggestion led me to realize that I can acheive the effect that I want by feathering and then masking off the other three sides with white rectangles!

Thanks very much for the tip!
