Simple question.

We want to upgrade a very large user NDS directory to an E-Directory + Active directory design using DirXML.

Right now we have several offices using NDS for NT, but not a complete implimentation. What we need to know is, can you run EDS and NDS for NT in the same tree.

If you know how to do this, please post some advice and what you have seen during this implimentation. All we want is to have both operating while we upgrade the NT 4 domains to Active Directory eventually moving everyone to EDS.

Thank you,

That combo was more than likely not tested and may not be supported by Novell. Hopefully someone has just tried it for giggles and will post. It should work if you manage your replicas right. And remember that NDS will ALWAYS talk in the lowest verb set for DS (so if you install NDS 8.5 and have NDS 7.55 in a replica ring, the ring will talk in the 7.55 verb set).

However, you may be forced to upgrade your NDS for NT to Acount Manager for NT. The life cycle of the NDS for NT product started with just the ability to manage accounts, then the next rev allowed you to place a replica on the server. When Novell released NDS eDirectory 8.5 they split the product in two. You can now get NDS eDirectory Corporate Edition that will give you the ability to place replicas on the NT server, but not manage NT accounts. You get the Account Manager product to manage the accounts.

Build your self a test nework and see if it will work if your budget will not allow you to upgrade your software. Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

Most directory services are backwards compatable. Since you are running NDS for NT, I would say that you probably want to have an up to date version of this running. Noting that NDS for NT is essentially E-Directory in an of itself. Check with your local Novell SE, he/she may be able to shed light on wether or not you can safely upgrade to e-directory with your current revision of NDS for NT. Having worked with NDS for many years, I would almost be willing to bet my paycheck that it is backwards compatable and it should not be a problem.

amazing thing is, it works with no problems...

but our SE told us Novell doesn't support it.

we are moving forward anyway, but i encourage others to make sure you have a well tested test envoirnment, alot of quarks when running account management + DIRXML and NDS for NT at the same time.

Still would love to hear from someone else who has tried this.

Thanks for the replies
