I have created a Public Folder and set it up to have mail directly sent to the folder.
How do I set it up where the email first goes to a mailbox and stays there and then another copy goes into the Public Folder.
I want this set up in case I ever have to restore these emails into the Public Folder.
During a restore I want to be able to just go to the specific mailbox and restore those emails and then I guess just copy them back into the Public Folder.

Log into the mailbox and set this up using the Rules Wizard...then make sure that mailbox isn't subject to any kind of cleanup agent (if you have one).

I do not have a mailbox set up for this email.
I gave the folder an email address.

The situation that I recently encountered was someone deleted a public folder.

The public folder had a mailbox associated with it.
The only issue I had was when I attempted to recover the email from the mailbox the mailbox was empty.

Is there any way for the mail to stay in the mailbox and also forward the mail to the public folder?

So basically a copy of each on both mailbox and public folder.

Because recovering a public folder is very time consuming.
I have to set up an identical server and recover the entire Information store.

So I figured if in the future the accidental deletion happens again, I can just restore the mailbox and once the mailbox is restored, just copy whatever is in the mailbox into the public folder.

I am new at Exchange Administration so if what I am saying is not clear or is not making sense please tell me.

Thanks for the feedback and if there is no other way I will definitely do what you have posted.

How about setting up Deleted Items Retention?

Also, could you explain what you mean by "the public folder had a mailbox associated with it"?

Create a rule on the folder to forward all posted items to the mailbox you wish to use. This will of course forward the items from the folder but not actually copy whats been posted on the public folder

Bront is right. The easy way is to turn on Deleted Items Retention. You can then recover any time during the specified time (set by you) and it doesn't leave you having to administer another mailbox.

As far as I am aware there is not a way of performing a Brick backup of the public folders which makes restoring a real pain. Deleted Item retention makes it easy.

If I'm wrong about the brick backup of public folders, I would be interested to know.
