Need clarification on SSL use

I am not very knowledgeable about encryption. My understanding was that when you install SSL cert in exch 2010 it would encrypt communications - I took that to mean the actual data transmitted gets encrypted.
Is that right? if not, what exactly is the SSL for?
Is it absolutely required in exch 2010
i never dealt with this is 2003

Answered in your other thread. SSL encrypts the connection. Always been that way. Even if your forced SSL in legacy versions, that only handles the connection.
