SUMMARY: I NEED COMMENTS AS TO WHY WINDOWS 2000 SERVER ISA BETTER NOS THAN NETWARE 5.1
I am thinking of upgrading to 2000 from Netware 5.1. I have to convince my boss why we should spend the $$$ to switch and what the top issues that USERS face and what benefits they will derive. Also what the benefits are from an administration point of view.
I have put together some benefits and would like suggestions for additions
NetWare versus 2000
This is a strategic decision, not a technological decision. As more applications enter the Jordache data center, they will be Windows 2000 based. There is no application support for Netware now or in the future. Why divide application and file and print services? Why maintain two separate user directories?
Migration can be phased. Users will be migrated a department at a time over a weekend. Possibly hire temps/interns to help with desktop migration and support Monday morning.
Start with Colfax. Migrate before Satori goes live there.
Issues
Platinum...can it be put on 2000?
Shortcomings of NetWare
Client Side
Netware cannot synchronize with a 2000 machine. Laptop users cannot take their work with them offline. With 2000 users can replicate a copy of their network files and folders by syncing their network drives to a local drive.
Users can ROAM to any desktop and get their network drives. No more local accounts and network accounts. Currently a user cannot sign on to another’s PC.
Server side
• Patches are amazingly simple to install through windows update.
• better logging...currently the abend log doesn't quite tell us what we need to know to troubleshoot problems
• No support for automated virus updates on server
• 2000 CAL is about $75 per connection
Netware CAL is about $155 per connection
• Native RADIUS support for VPN users
• Single user database
Next Step - Exchange
More management of mailboxes through quotas, not system wide "cleanups" based on date of message
• APPLICATIONS. APPLICATIONS. APPLICATIONS!!!!
• SPAM protection tools available
• BLACKBERRY support
• PALM support
• OUTLOOK as client.
• OWA - Outlook web access!!!!
• ACT! integration
• Third party tools and enhancements galore!!!
