Running Aloha 6.4.29. My server is about 7 years old, working great. Want to upgrade, ordered a new business class server with Windows 2012 64 bit essentials already installed. My questions are: 1. Will this OS be compatible with Aloha. I was told that Aloha likes Win 7 32 bit. Is this true or will the 2012 server be fine? Q#2. Should I upgrade my Aloha version now or will 6.4.29 get me a ways. I'm satisfied feature wise, talking strictly compliance here. I don't really trust my dealer any longer. Seems the bigger they get the dumber they are. Thanks.

How many front house terminals do you have?
Win 7 32 bit will work just fine for 6.4.29. I would suggest upgrading to 6.4.39 as well as an EDC upgrade to 7.XX.
You will be as PCI compliant as you can be without having to spend money on a software upgrade. Some other things to think about is what condition are your Front of house computers. If you upgrade to the newer version, your current hardware may not be robust enough for it. NCR recommends atleast 1 gig of ram. I have seen plenty of users get by with less, but things are slow and can be lagging at times. You could also look to upgrade the FOH to POSready9.

I don't believe Aloha 6.4 will run on a 2012 server, perhaps Coorman or dauphin2 might provide there experience as well.

As far as what the dealer will tell you, its there job to get you spend as much as you can.

6.4 will not work correctly because of 64 bit and HASP driver compatibility, you would be lucky to get that working on 2008 R2 let alone 2012

Consider:
32 bit OS can only use 4Gb Ram (IMO everyone should be using PC's with 64 bit OS, 8Gb Ram)
All FOH POS need a supported OS (that means all FOH XP machines will be non-compliant)
You need a "commercial" managed firewall that has IPS feature (and other features PCI requests that non-commercial firewalls don't have)
The POSReady 2009 OS is only available to OEM's so loading it on a POS terminal that had XP may violate the EULA

I hope people realize that upgrades for PCI is a lot more than replacing the computer in the office

I run 8 FOH terminals. Thanks for the replies but they're somewhat contradictory. As stated, my new server comes with 2012 server 64 bit installed. TobeThor is saying IMO everyone should be on 64. Dauphin says HASP issue. IK win 7 32 will work but do I scrap the 2012 server? I will if I have to.

How about FOH terminals after April 8 all on XP. I heard that XP embedded will still have support for a couple more years. 1510 terms can't handle 2 gigs of RAM so they landfill candidates, however, heard that there is a way get terms to run Win 7 perfectly on a gig. Anyone know of this?

If you want to use that 2012 Server you HAVE to be on later 6.5/6.7 versions of Aloha or higher. If you have these versions of Aloha feel free to put whatever OS on your server you want, but if you stick with 6.4 you are limited on your OS choices. 6.4 hasn't been updated since 2011 and was never updated to support a 64bit OS.

With 8 terminals, i'm not sure why 2012 Server OS was purchased to begin with. You do not need Server operating system to operate 8 terminals.

I would check to see if you are licensed for 6.5/6.7. If so, upgrade to that and install windows 7 64bit.
If not, then install windows 7 32 bit.

As for terminals, if you are on XP pro, get them changed out to XPE and you will get a few years left out of them. 1510 can only get you 512mb of RAM. You may be able to get POSR 2009 or POSR 7 on them but will need to get the drivers from Radiant.

Speaking of which has anyone tried putting PoSR2009 or POSR 7 on the 1510? if so, do you have a working image?

I wouldn't use a Server OS if it was not needed.
Upgrade your Aloha software.. are you on software maintenance?
Preferred back office is Win 7 Pro, 64 Bit, 8Gb Ram (but you need to upgrade the Aloha software)
FOH POS, I have been advised that you are not "authorized" to load an embedded OS (POS Ready 09 or POS Ready 7) on a machine that has an XP license. Someone correct that if it is wrong

All good info. Reason for the 2012 Server is simply because it comes with the PC I'm buying. Everyone thanx a ton, helped greatly in the decision which will be trash the 2012, load 7-64, get Aloha upgraded and get EDC v.7. You guys rock.

Now it would be good to see how the terminal thing shakes out. Got to be a million XP's out there to be dealt with.

Be sure that your POS and internet networks are segmented as per PCI rules. Your new PC should have two Nics to accomplish that and it's very important to keep the FOH isolated from the internet connection.

I what point should I be using an actual server operating system? I have 9 terminals and 12 Sol handhelds right now. The handhelds have their own file server using a Win 7 OS 32 bit. The system crashes on very busy nights due to the DEBBAK2.g01 file being very large on the BOH server, so large the Aloha Drive D fills up and has no more room to write files.

The distributor claims it is due to third party SW causing the problem, I do not believe this at all.

How much free space is on your aloha drive? Here are some files you can remove from all dated folders if they are there.
*.tdx
*.cdx

You can also remove everything in the tmp folder
