I am working with a customer who has AIX 3.1 (lslpp -l bos.obj at 03.01.0003.0018) installed (its a long story). They have a "mksysb" tape, but no installation diskettes. My recollection of AIX 3.1 mksysb is that it did NOT create a bootable tape, but that three diskettes (boot, display, install/maint) diskettes were needed to begin re-installation of the mksysb tape.

Does anybody have these diskettes or an AIX 3.1 system that can be used to create them?

The commands to create the diskettes were as follows:
BOSBOOT:
bosboot -w -c -d /dev/rfd0 -p /usr/bin/dskt.proto -f /usr/bin/dskt.fs -b /usr/bin/dskt.image

DISPLAY:
/usr/lpp/bosinst/display/mkdispdskt

INSTALL/MAINT:
/usr/lpp/bosinst/diskette/mkinstdskt

Good luck on getting the diskettes...however I thought that there were several ways to
boot at 3.1 ...and yes I thought the mksysb was bootable ...tar format, not backup...but it did boot I believe..... if they created it that way.... as well as there was a bootable tape install media..... Your best bet is original tape install media if your system is not up and you cannot create boot diskettes
