I just went through the least fun experience recovering my Windows 8.1 installation, as I had to fix my booting files (a result of attempting a dual boot setup). And I certainly would not want to go through it again.
Should anyone like to share his/her best way to do this by all means do, I'd love to learn that.

I did Google it but didn't find any defined way to do it.

I don't bother mucking about with just backing up certain files, I just create an image of the drive every week unto my NAS, runs automatically every Sunday night at 2am. Their are many different products to do this, Ghost,True image, todo backup, but lately I have just been using the image backup tool in windows 7, 8 should have one also.

You guys are amazing! It seems to me you both are always helping me out! :)
After searching around for a way of specifically backing up the booting files, I seemed to have concluded that there's no way to do it. Hence, possibly the best way to get that and more done is as you rclarke250 suggested = making an image backup file. Which I did today actually.
Now that that is done, I feel safe to move forward to setup the dual boot ;)

Just installed this on a bunch of lab PCs and it's quite nice preventing "non-IT morons" from screwing up a perfectly good computer.

I tried for four days to use CD's, DVD's, nothing worked.
1. A boot partition must be FAT32, whereas a backup one has to be NTFS.
2. Bought a SMARTDrive usb of 32 gig at Walmart for less than $40.00.
3. Used it with Control Panel>File Manger>Lower left corner>Make a Recover Disk
[/indent]a. The system will format(FAT32) and create a boot+recovery disk.
4. Disk Management>Fined the usb drive>Left Click on the unused partition>it will show striated>left click
you will see list chose Creat Simple Vol., go through the steps 1.Name the Vol. 2.Format(NTFS).
5. When finished go back to File Management Backup(after it finds new vol. Click it.
6. Lower left select System Image Backup and follow your nose.

Now you have a Bootable Recovery option as well as a Backup of the system.

hope this helps
