I've set up 5 WLAN's so I'm not a complete newbie at this, but I've got this project that is a first for me. Here is what I am tasked to do:
1. Set up WLAN access in 3 houses that are all on the same property (rough life for someone). There are very few trees or other physical obstacles between the buildings; it's a faily clear shot to each one regarding line of sight.
2. Enable 802.11b & 802.11g access.
3. There will be up to 5 laptops connecting to the WLAN at any given time.
4. Let's say house #1 is base camp and we're standing at its front door looking out at the other 2 houses on the property. House #2 (the pool house) is about 350 feet away at 10 o'clock and house #3 (the guest house) is about 600 feet away in the 12 o'clock direction.
5. Behind house #3, there is an AT&T cell tower a good 1,000 feet away at the top of the hill. Not sure if I'll need to use a yaggi antenna yet or not, but that should be easy enough to determine once the WAP up and running I'm guessing.
Here's my plan so far:
1. Buy Linksys 802.11A&G WAP.
2. Install it in the Pool house since that house is sort of in the middle of the other two houses on the property.
3. Use yaggi antenna if needed to combat the potential interference from that AT&T cell tower up on the hilltop.
I'm hoping to get some constructive criticism or good advice or at least some tasty ice cream for cryin' out loud! The WiFi hardware reviews I've been reading on CNet and elsewhere are not of much help because I don't know how competent the users who wrote the reviews are, and there are several reviews that contradict one another regarding the users' experiences with the WAP devices. So I'm looking for some battle-tested advice, obviously, which is why I always use Tek-Tips. Thanks everyone.
