I am in the process of setting up an FTP server which, when live, will receive large volumes of files with JPEG attachments.

When these files hit the FTP server, an application will move them to a database on a different server. Before this happens, the files need to have been virus checked.

What I'm looking for is an AV application that can check these files as soon as they are received at the FTP server, and then either move them to a "clean" directory or mark them as scanned in some way, so that I can be sure nothing is moved into the database unless it's definitely virus-free.

Is anyone aware of an AV tool that can do this ?

TIA

Rob

Assuming I understand what you want, it sounds like it's not so much a special task, as making sure that it runs in proper sequence. Sounds to me like what you need is a front end server set up that will scan before passing traffic to your database server. As for what AV program to use, the program I am most familiar with is McAfee, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Just make sure you're running ver. 7.x Enterprise (if you have it available AND if you're truly running a server based on NTFS, as the &.x engine is incompatible with W9x operating systems). If you are already locked in to an agreement with Trend, Symantec, or any other reputable product, I would imagine that any of them can serve the same purpose.

Best of luck to you.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

any decent AV with an On-Access scanner will scan the file as it is saved to the server drive anyway and move it OUT to a quarantine if infected or suspect.

Thanks for the info so far, folks.

Does anyone know where I can find any figures on the processor overhead I'm likely to incur when scanning these files, or is there a tool which can measure it ?
