Hi All

I'd like a way to test open port before the servers are in place. So what I want is a util that will run on a 2000 or XP laptop and accept telnet connections on any port you set.

Seems very useful - surely it must exist. Would love something that worked for UDP as well but if just TCP that's fine.

You can use telnet to connect to nearly any service that uses a TCP port. It is not necessary, and may cause some problems, to run a telnet server on a port that will at some point be used for another service. Most servers will not provide a login prompt, but a blank screen with a cursor in the upper left indicates that you are connected to the port. If the connection is not successful, you will receive some sort of error message.

A better solution is to use the Microsoft portqry command, which must be downloaded. Allows for testing of UDP ports as well as TCP and gives a bit more information to help track the problem sometimes. See The UI version will install the command line version as well and is a bit easier than the command line version on its own.

Runs on 2K or XP. It is a bit buggy -- crashes from time to time, but when it works it is a good thing to have.

Thx but my problem was not portscanning - it was having a service to portscan. So for the Kbase: Somebody on another list suggested - run up IIS on the lappie - coz you can change the default port to anything. Like all great ideas - SIMPLE - I'm kicking myself ;-)
