I am an experienced computer repair person (10+ years professionally) and basic networking setup tech.

I never got into Cisco due to the lack of a need. Recently though i have an opportunity to have over 100 cisco routers sold to me. The requirement is that i need to be able to delete all the previous client's information on the cisco equipment and restore factory defaults.

I do not have all the usernames and passwords to these units (they are cisco 2650 series routers and a couple 2651XM untis).

So............. the question is what would be the best way to learn how to do this process or what would be the easiest for someone who has never connected into a cisco router>?

where should i start?

buy yourself a CCNA portable command guide from amazon for 30$. They have procedures for 2600 series routers.

You don't need a whole book. Everything you need to know can be found here:

That's Cisco's master page for password recovery. Once that is done, just do a "write erase" command instead of a "copy start run" in the listed procedure, and you have effectively restored the router to factory defaults, no usernames/passwords to worry about.

so i went to the cisco page and saw the following

"Router>enable
Password:
Password:
Password:
% Bad secrets

Router>show version
Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-IS-M), Version 12.0(7)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.3(2)XA4, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)"

--- does this mean that at the prompt for the password at bootup i would enter "% Bad secrets" to bypass the password requirement?

thanks, i will have to try this all tomorrow.

no no. you need to enter rommon and then change the config register to 0x2142 and reboot. Then either change the passwd or wr erase and change the config register back to 0x2102 and reboot.

ISPKing, he's not screwed if no service password-recovery is set. He can still hit Break to wipe the config, which is what he's trying to do.

You sir are Correct. I mixed it up with the ASA which will erase the entire contents of the file system. Not entirely screwed that way either, but a pain for someone who doesn't know how to re-flash.
