I am building a file server and need a good hard drive for a RAID 1 configuration.

I read a lot of negative reviews for seagate hard drives in reference to being used as RAID and on Linux servers, and i have read negatives about their customer service.

I am finding It hard to get many reviews on Hitachi drives under the above circumstances.

I am torn between using a 1TB drive or just a smaller 500GB drive.

looking for 32MB sata 3G 7200RPM

can anyone comment on the below drives or recommend one?

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 750GB Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB Hard Drive

reliability in a Linux server and set to RAID 1 is most important. 10-15 cents per gig is my price range unless ones that cheap are unreliable.

Thank you

hi
i have the 500gb 7200:11 seagate, and also the wd cavier 640gb black....results-

seagage 7200:11 500gb- wd black 640gb
burst-129mg/s burst-229mg/s
average read-90mg/s avg read-95mg/s
random access-12.3 random access-12.9
cpu utilization-4% cpu utilization-1%

most of the results point to the wd...i know seagate has sold a ton of em,,,,but i would put my money on th wd 640 black.

well, i just got 98mg/s average read with my 640gb black wd...not bad

In Raid...almost the same drive as the Black Edition but optimised for server/Raid type of applications.
