NEC NEAX 2000 IPS NEWBIE QUESTION(s) 1

Hello All,

I work for a school district that has the NEC 2000 IPS installed. Since I do Admin/PC Support, I figured the phone system would be nice to learn, too! I use MatWorx 7 to access the PBX to do 'litle' things like change names on the extensions of new staff or staff that have changed classrooms and ensure the date and time are correct. Yeah, I know, you phone tech's are probably ROFL right now, but hey...Im just learning. My employer will most likely not pay for me to take a NEC Admin class, so let's not even go there. :)

Here's my question/problem:

The Guidance Dept. would like the counselor(s) phone to ring if a call comes in from the outside. Here's what is happening...call from outside hits the main number, caller can press option 5, use the first three letters of the counselor(s) last name to get connected to the counselor(s) office, call is sent directly to VM, counselor(s) phone doesn't ring.
The VoIP phones we have installed are the NEC IP(16D2).

Like I said, this is new to me so some 'virtual' handholding may be needed! ;-)

A couple of thoughts...

First, you didn't mention the type of voice mail, but if it's an NEC/Active Voice product, it sounds like the users mailbox is set to "no transfer to their work phone". The individual user can change this setting by logging into their mailbox, going to "set up options", then "transfer and delivery options". The first option under transfer is "transfer to your work phone is (on or off) would you like to change it?". If it is set to off press 1 and the voice mail will ask "would you like me to turn it on?" Press 1 for yes and your done.

Second, it could be as simple as the user having their phone set to forward all calls to voice mail or DND. If that was the case no one could call that phone even internally. You can tell by using any display set and calling the extension number. If you see FWD ALL XXX then dial #5 from the users extension that has the forwarding set. #5 is the default code. If you see DND dial #8 from the users extension. Again #8 is the default code. Don't know if the installing vendor might have changed them.

Just as you had suggested, it was the VM option. I know there are a lot of other options within the VM system, it's just a matter of listening to and documenting all the possiblities.
