NEC DV-5700A read 4x media?

Does anyone know if this DVD reader is limited to slower -R media? It reads rented movies ok and my older -R that were 1x speed, but will not read the newly created 4X media. How can I tell if it is the reader, the media, or the authoring software? The finished 4x media play in set top players and also in the memorex burner drive, but not this old NEC.
