We have 32 NEC Dterm series i phones with an added IP adapter on the bottom. Our users connect to our gateways through consumer DSL or Cable connections. The users are complaining of a lot of dropped calls, sound quality, etc. Does anyone know where to get firmware upgrades for this system, or a good place to read about the system? Thanks!

It might not be as simple as a firmware upgrade for the IP adaptor. Have you checked the DSL/Cable service? Do you have QoS on the service? Is the service shared with data? Do you have enough bandwith? What CODECS/compression are you using?

You will need to contact your local NEC dealer and get some expert advice and assistance.

With most any ISP, QoS will not be something you will be able to get from them. I've yet to find one youo will quaranty QoS. I have a NEC Soft Phone (SP20) as an application running on my PC. I am connected via Cable Modem and have VPN set up betweem my PC and my home office (te get through the FireWall). But have no method of securing QoS. DSL and Cable offer plenty of Bandwidth but QoS is something you won't get. Be that the case, you are subjuct to voice quality issues. But overall (95%) of the time, my VoIP quality is fantastic.

A good test is to place the IP phone(s) at the main location so they're not going through the public internet. If the voice quality is OK, upgrading the firmware on the IP adapters will not resolve your problem.
