the reason i asked is that i am doing a whole bunch of title layers. They have the same size, all that changed is the text. When I try to locate one of them, it takes forever.
Not possible that I know of, but heres a trick that I use all the time to select layers:
Choose the move tool(v) and make sure Auto Select Layer is selected. Now carefully click on whatever text you are concerned with (the very tip of the move tool pointer must touch an opaque pixel in the text) and that layer will now be selected and highlighted in the layers palette! (Just click the text carefully so as not to actually move it)
And another idea would be to put your layers into appropriate layer sets. On the bottom of the layers palette there is an icon for creating a set, mouseover to get the right one then drag your layers into the set.
Also with regards to dimoj's post you don't have to have Auto Select Layer selected, simply hold Ctrl and click on an object in the canvas and it will select the layer for you. (that's the shortcut way to do it)
Yes that shortcut is great, but to be even more specific, holding Ctrl while using the move tool isn't just the shortcut for selecting AUTO SELECT LAYER, what it actually does is trigger the OPPOSITE of what the AUTO SELECT LAYER check box is doing.
So if ASL is NOT checked, holding ctrl will temporarily activate it. But if ASL IS checked then holding ctrl will switch it off temporarily.
