Hi. We are running a NetWare 4.11 network with SP8a. We have a NT 4.0 server that serves as our PDC and runs NDS for NT version 2.0. We want to uninstall NDS for NT but everytime we try we receive the following error:

"Error writing domain RID to the registry"

Does anyone know how to resolve this error? Thanks!

Here is the solution(s) you need to review..

TID Number 2937072

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Issue
When the domain object has been deleted from NDS, there are only two options to restore the system without reinstalling the NT server.

Option 1:
If there is a recent backup of DS (created when DSRepair is run) that contains the domain object, that can be used to get the domain object back into the tree. However, any changes made to the domain between the time DS was last backed up and the time the domain object was deleted will be lost.

Option 2:
This procedure is to be used only in the event of the domain object having been deleted from DS. When this happens, the users cannot login and the product cannot be reinstalled or uninstalled.

1) Rename C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SAMSRV.DLL to be C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SAMSRV.OLD
2) Rename C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\MSSAMSRV.DLL to be C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SAMSRV.DLL
2a) NDS4NT 2.0 now includes the Novell Service Pack Sentry service (see TID 2945831, section 2 for further information) that impacts the renaming of SAMSRV.DLL. Rename C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SPSENTRY.EXE to be C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SPSENTRY.OLD
3) Change to the system32\netware directory and del *.dll
4) Reboot the NT server (the NT server will now be using Microsoft's SAMSRV.DLL due to the rename in step 2 above)
5) Login to the NT server and run regedt32
6) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\
7) Select security permissions from the menu - Select administrators - Give admins full control - Replace permission on existing subkeys (check box) Click OK. Click Yes.
8) Expand security key - NT Migration key and Nwsam key - Delete both keys
9) Go back to security key change it back to special access - (write dac and read control) Check replace permission on subkeys.
10) Remove the Novell Client from the NT server

NDS4NT is now uninstalled. The NT domain has reverted back to the state in was in before the installation of NDS4NT. NDS4NT can now be reinstalled.

Thanks for your reply but I've already seen this TID and I'm not sure if it applies to me. We did not delete the domain object from NDS. It still exists and everyone can login just fine unlike the article suggests. Are you saying I should follow this procedure anyway? If I do this will I lose my user accounts on the NT server?

The newer version of NDS for NT actually restores the NT server to its original condition with all of the NT accounts in tact (These are the ones that exist in the NDS tree). The older version does not rename a specific dll file and can lock you out etc. But yes, if you want to uninstall NDS for NT and the automated version is not working, then you will have to do everything manually.

May I ask why is it you want to remove NDS for NT???? Reason being is that I have worked with it and found that it does work correctly and as designed. Is there a specific problem you are encountering or need to resolve that may allow you to keep this installed?

If you need, feel free to call me 402-233-7626 Office, and I will be more than glad to assist you...

Here is another TID that deals specifically with uninstalling NDS for NT... Sorry your earlier post did not give specifics, so I based my findings on an assumption.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goal
How to remove NDS for NT from a Primary Domain Controller (applies to a BDC as well).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fact
Novell NDS for NT 2.0

NDS for NT 1.0

Microsoft Windows NT Server

Formerly TID 2934236

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cause
Instructions found in product documentation do not clearly state how to remove NDS for NT.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fix
Log into NDS as admin and into the local NT machine as administrator. Go to Control Panel/Network/Services. Under Network Services, select Novell NDS for NT Client. Click the Remove button. A warning message will appear stating: "This action will permanently remove the component from the system. If you wish to reinstall it, you will need to restart the system before doing so. Do you want to continue? Yes/No."

Click Yes. You will then receive a Novell Client for Windows NT setup message screen stating: "The Novell NDS for NT client is installed and the domain has been migrated. You must reverse migrate through the Domain Object Wizard prior to removing the client, Do you want to run the Domain Object Wizard? Yes/No".

Click Yes. You will then see the Domain Object Wizard Uninstall screen and be able to remove NDS for NT.

Alternatively, you can run sammig.exe directly from the winnt\system32 directory or you can expand a compressed version of the program from the NDS for NT CD in the i386\REDIR directory. Sammig.exe is the same program used to migrate domain accounts into the NDS tree when installing NDS for NT.

Once the NT domain accounts are removed from NDS, you will see a message prompting you to reboot the server.
