Greetings.
I have a client with a random slowness issue on some NT servers. There is one large network that has a router splitting it in half. Both sides are connected through fiber - a fast connection.
In each subnet, there is an NT domain. One side has 2 NT cluster servers in a domain, the other side has 4 NT servers in a domain. There is a trust between these two domains. The problem I am seeing is when opening server manager or user manager. There is usually a delay that lasts 30 seconds to 4 minutes. User manager is closer to 4 minutes. Occasionally though, it will open instantly like it is supposed to. It seems to be instant after I open and close it right away - like its caching names or something.
To further add complexity, both domains have NDS for NT installed on them. I don't know if this has broken something in windows that is causing a timeout. In the domain with 4 servers, all servers have SP5. I would like to go to SP6, but fear it may break NDS for NT.
If I ping between these servers, they resolve the name quick and ping times are all 10ms. These servers all have an LMHOSTS file of all the servers, plus are using WINS.
Have any of you seen an issue like this before? How do I figure out a timeout problem in NT?
Thanks,
Lance
