I now have the OS installed, no errors, and I am ready to migrate the data. My question is when installing EDirectory, does it matter which tree or server it is installed under. Can we install it before we migrate the tree to the new server? We also have Macs which complicate the whole issue. That is why we would like to install EDirectory, to test Mac connectivity. Also, are there any tips to installing EDirectory other than the ones in the install manuals?
a sincere thank you

First, understand that EDirectory is a TREE UPGRADE so you must install it on any server that has a partition/replica on it, no it does NOT have to be the server with the MASTER. You can have different servers running different versions of NDS/EDirectory and have you network work perfectly.

The most IMPORTANT thing is to make sure the the server you do the install on has a HEALTHY TREE. There is a Novell TID on how to make sure your tree is healthy. This should be checked monthly and possibly more often depnding on your network configuration and traffic.

Last, if the MACs currently connect to the existing tree they should have no problem connecting after the upgrade takes place. Joshua Rothschild

Thank you for your response, this is my first time working on a project such as this, and I would like for everything to go smoothly. I am an intern at this company and the net admin was laid off about a week ago, and I am the acting net admin. We did not get the server installed before he was let go, so I get the privelage of this wonderful learning experience. The main question is "when should we install EDirectory? Before the data migration or after?"

I just want to make sure I understand your post. We have a current server "main" and the brand new server "new main". On "main" there is the "current" tree that is in use which is the master tree. On "new main" there is a tree called "temptree" which has only a few users (the admins). When we install EDirectory on to "new main" in "temptree" then that tree\server will be upgraded to EDirectory. When we do the data migration from "main" to "new main" this weekend, the "current" tree will replace "temptree" and maintain EDirectory as an installed tree upgrade on "new main". The users should come in Monday and notice one thing- main has a lot more storage...
One more question, when we install EDirectory, will it restart all the server or just "new main"

Thank You very, verry much.

If I understand your scenario, you may have a number of problems. The tree name will be "newtree" and the file server name will be "new main" this HAS to effect you users' login info, login scripts and possibly batch files used to execute applications. You may also have duplicate admin user ids if they are not spelled exactly the same way in both trees. When you upgrade the "new main" to EDirectory it will restart ONLY the "new main" nor all the servers.

I hope this helps.

The tree on New Main is esentially usless as there are no objects that are not already in Main. I would remove Directory Services from New Main with NWConfig, then re-install Directory Services on New Main and when it asks for a Tree name give it the Tree name from Main. New Main will be installed in the Original Tree and you should just see the new server and volume objects in the tree. See Novell TID 10016689 or 10021298 or search the Knowledge Base for "Install Server into Tree."
After this is done you can migrate whatever you want to the New Main server.
If you do not intend to keep the old server in the tree after all the data and services are migrated, move the Master Replica to the New Main server then remove Directory Services from old Main and retire the hardware.
There is a lot more involved but this is just an overview of the procedure, just be sure to search the Novell Knowledge Base for any questions you may have and do a lot of reading before you start.

Good Luck
Ken
