The 3rd tape of a 3-tape NDMP backup set was accidentally deleted.
When I try to query that tape from a UNIX storage node with the scanner command I get:

[root@server] >/opt/networker/bin/scanner /dev/rmt/c8t0d0BESTnb
scanner: Invalid argument

or

[root@server] >/opt/networker/bin/scanner -n -i /dev/rmt/c8t0d0BESTnb
scanner: media database not responding; retrying... scanner: media database not responding; aborting

Can the scanner command be run from any storage node, or does it have to be run from the NetWorker server?
If so, what is the correct syntax for instructing scanner to query a remote tape drive on a UNIX server (our NetWorker server does not have a locally attached tape drive)?

scanner is a storage node command. But as there is no software installed on the NDMP client (which is a SN as well) you can not run it there.

Of course, you could run the command at any other SN. But it simply will not work for NDMP save sets. This is due to the fact that this info is not embedded in the save streams as for all other non-NDMP clients. For NDMP backups, NDMP is controlling the data format, not NW.
