Help ! We are running Networker(AIX 5.1) 7.2.1 and NDMP 4 (NAS Celerra ) and the tape keeps hanging. Occasionally it will perform one save set backup and then hang or it wont backup at all.

Keep in mind that NDMP controls the devices, not NW.

A little more details would help.
- What does the daemon.log file state?
- Does the savegroup report show more details?
If not, run the savegrp with more verbosity and try to get more information.

Hi 605,

This is the error you get in the daemon.log

05/15/06 20:05:41 nsrmmd #15: Error reading. System Error: Connection reset by peer
05/15/06 20:05:41 nsrmmd #15: Detect the end of the NDMP connection.

The savegroup report does not show any errors.

Unfortunatley it is not possible to run the savegrp with more verbosity at this moment in time.

Is the info from the daemon.log of any use to you?

Thanks.

Sorry, that does not mean to much. It looks like a network related problem.

However, since NW 7.2 you can also backup NDMP data to any other non-NDMP device (thanks to the embedded DSA functionality). If you use it, you will eliminate NDMP.

Maybe you have the chance to try this alternative - you do not even need a license for that.

I would just try mounting some tapes in your NDMP drives.. I would think if you can get your NAS to do this you should be able to perform a backup.

605 - So what you are saying.. is that if I can do an NDMP backup to a drive that is scsi attached to my Legato server? Does this work in the reverse as well.. Can I do a restore of NDMP data on a server which has no NDMP devies attached to it?

Thanks

Well - it would not be a good idea if you could not restore the NDMP data as well ;-)
Of yourse you can only recover to a NDMP client.

Main features of the DSA features are:
- Avoiding the 'extra' NDMP layer
- No specific NDMP devices (at the filer needed)
- All NW drive specific features are supported, especially multiplexing
- (A)FTDs can be used
