hi,

I have just taken support of a client who has a 3com NBX 100. The previous IT company didn't leave any software or passwords. What would be the best approach to getting access/a handle on this unit? I have worked with different PBX's (Nortel) in the past.

many thanks for any suggestions.

NBX - Cannot Log in after changing Administrator Password

Problem: How to recover from lost Administrator password
Fact: SuperStack 3 NBX
Fact: NBX 100
Fact: NBX 25
Fact: NBX Call Processor
Problem: Cannot log in as administrator
Problem: Lost administrator password
Change: Changed password
Fix: Default Password is 0000 or 00000000.
New passwords must be 8 to 10 characters long. If you believe the password has been changed to a length exceeding 10 characters: When logging in truncate the password to only 10 characters (enter just the first 10 characters), and it should work. If not, please contact 3Com Customer Support.

NBX - Understanding NBX Passwords and Security

Problem: Understanding NBX passwords and Security
Problem: How to change the password
Problem: What are the uses for the different NBX passwords
Fact: SuperStack 3 NBX
Fact: NBX 100
Fact: NBX 25
Fact: System Security
Fact: Security
Fact: Administrator Password
Fact: Reset passwords
Fact: Auto-Attendant Password
Fact: System Backup Password
Fact: Reporting Password
Fact: Backup Password
Fact: Virtual Tie Lines Password
Fix: For security purposes 3Com urges every NBX Distributor to change each of the default passwords at time of system installation, even if such features are not used. 3Com also recommends changing passwords on a regular basis.
[ ] Administrator Password: When entering NetSet, The word "administrator" has to be entered as the User Name, along with the password. Also, the word "administrator" must be entered in all lower case letters. This is the password for FULL access to make adds, moves, and changes to the NBX system. This is the highest level password by which all other passwords are controlled. The default is four zeros (0000). This is also the FTP password. This password MUST be changed from default before you can access the system via FTP.
[ ] Reset User Password:
This button is used to reset any user extension password back to default. The default for each user is the extension number. Use this if a user forgets their password, which is used for voice mail access, user NetSet administration, TAPI applications, and IMAP4 for retrieval of voice mail via an email account. Each extension has only this one password for everything. Also, if you wish to LOCK OUT a user or employee, use this to default their password, then log into their voice mail box and change it to something they will not know. This will prevent them from all user services. NOTE: Hunt Group voice mail passwords cannot be reset. Click [here] for more information about hunt group passwords.
[ ] Auto Attendant Password:
This password allows dial access to modify the Main Menu of the default auto-attendant - Please change it on ALL NBX system installs! This password is for logging into the system manager mailbox (mailbox 999) in order to change the Default Auto Attendant main menu (500). The default is four zeros (0000). To use it from an NBX phone, dial 500 then * then * again (same procedure to log into voice mail from the outside) and enter 999 as the mailbox number, followed by the password. You can change the Company's main greeting, and even menu options from off site at any time. One use may be during an emergency, you can dial into your own company's main line, and change the greeting to indicate you are closed for the day due to inclement weather. It has limited use, and generally it is easier to change via NetSet, but provides the means to change your main menu from the outside. Because of this please CHANGE this password, or anyone at any time can call your main line and change the company greeting by using the default password!
NOTE: Only Menu 500 can be changed - it is not possible to change other Auto Attendant Menus in this manner from dialing in with a phone. NetSet is required.
[ ] System Backup Password:
This password is used to perform a backup from any web browser without having to log in to NetSet as the Administrator. This allows the Customer, or any individual, to be responsible for doing the weekly backup without having full access to NetSet as Administrator. Please change it on ALL NBX system installs! They will be able to perform system backups only - nothing else. The following NBX URL can be used to create a backup of an NBX system from any browser, using the System Backup password:
which uses the NCP IP address, and the System Backup Password (12345678). The default for this password is four zeros (0000) which, if not changed, will allow any individual with TCP/IP access to your NCP the ability to perform a system backup. Please change this from the default even if you do not intend to use it! Remember that performing a system backup does interrupt phone system use, so backups should be scheduled after hours, or at minimum use times if possible.
[ ] Reporting Password:
This is the password used by the CDR application that runs on a PC, or other third party application, to retrieve the NBX Call Detail records from the system without logging into NetSet, by using the following NBX URL:
which uses the NCP IP address, the reporting password (12345678), and the YEAR (2000), MONTH (1), and DAY (1) for which you wish to begin retrieving records from. By typing this URL in any browser, you can retrieve an unformatted ASCII dump of the NBX Call Detail Records. This URL can be for troubleshooting CDR applications. Please change this password, even if you don't use CDR, to avoid the security risk of CDR being turned on in NetSet, and your company's Call Detail being exposed.
[ ] Virtual Tie Lines Password (version 4 and above):
This password can be set, as an option, if your system is licensed for VTL use, to require a password for "hop off". See the Administration and Installation manuals for details. Security risk is HIGH if your NBX systems are on the public IP network, where hackers could (theoretically) make long distance phone calls using your system. It is good practice to change this and ALL passwords, even if you don't use them. If you forget them, you can still change them later. Better to change it and forget it than to not change it at all !!
