Hi there,

I installed the NB 5.1 w/ MP3 on a server (W2K3 SP1, Compaq-Server DL380, built-in streamer Compaq DLT4000). The Admin-Console tells me everything about the streamer and about the 2 tapes (DL2001 and DL2002) I configured during installation. There are even more tapes - A0000-A0002 the software installed itself.
When I insert a used tape (the tape´s working; tested it with Windows NT-Backup and it works), nothing happens when i start to erase the tape (Volume Groups -> Standalone -> right-click -> long / quick erase). In the Activity Monitor it just tells me that the tape is being mounted, but the streamer is not working at all.
When I want to start a configured backup, the activity monitor tells me, that the backup tries to mount A0000 with an error (could not read media or media is unusable for backups), then it mounts DL2001, and finally it release the tape from the streamer.

I don´t know what to configure or what to do right now. Maybe I did something totally wrong or I forgot to do something additional. Someone told me to format the tapes?!?

Thanks for your posts and your ideas!

Regards from munich
Thorsten

What are the Veritas Drivers? Are they for the streamer? The device "Compaq DLT4000" is shown correctly?!?

You must use the Veritas Device drivers. As an FYI, "Streamer = Single DLT Tape Drive

Thanks for this information. I´m downloading the driver (wow, about 27MB) and will install them. Hope that works! Will give feedback...

Driver is installed (driver in W2K3 device manager: now Veritas, before it was M$), Server rebooted, but the same result as before. Hmm. Here are some additional infos that may be helpful for my problem:

Devices -> Standalone Drive -> right click on the device -> drive diagnostics -> start - nothing happens exept the following
- state: failed
- drive not DOWN, aborting test
Why???

Device Monitor -> right click on device -> down drive -> status ready: no.
When up drive -> signal light of streamer is flickering -> status ready: yes.
Why can I access the device this way but not when testing the drive?
And when I want to erase the tape inside (by quick oder long erase) there´s also nothing happening. No flickering, no access to the tape.

Do you have some more ideas?

So tell me - am I blind? What function has the option "quick erase" oder "long erase" when I right-click on a tape? NetBackup v5.1 / MP3a

Sorry, but have you ever worked with NetBackup? I HAVE installed NetBackup und I CAN SEE these buttons!

Can you see a pending job in de device monitor, if so drag and drop the job on an empty drive.
Second option use the bplabel-command first before using existing non NBU-tapes.
Third option check in the Master Server Properities - Media all the options on 'allow media overwrite'.

Wow, this was the first useable post! Thanks a lot for these informations! First I selected all options in "allow media overwrite", then I checked the bplabel (error "invalid density/drive type"), but nevertheless I testet my scheduled backup, and what should I say... it works!!!

Great post! You made me happy ;-)
