Background - as about plus I have a Dell Latitude 600 about 5 months old. I work from my house so my computer is for both business and personal. I also have a legacy SystemWorks2001. These are both up to date as of yesterday (liveupdate). IE=v5.5. Win2000=v5, SP4.

I have set up several persona on my o/s rather than run with just administrator (I'm trying to make stealing my laptop a big waste of time for the thief). The only 2 persona that matter are myself (poweruser) and administrator.

I thought to rid myself of spyware/adware using a program called Spyware Nuker. I just ran the scanner and deleted the obvious files. BUT...

I'm not sure why my NAV ceased to work, but it may have had something to that "cleansing". I uninstalled NAV and reinstalled (had to do this as admin), and found everything worked well as administrator but when I returned to my operating persona I got an error message. The message popup has stopped now and I only get SystemWorks. NAV is integrated into Systemworks in my administrator role, but does not show in my operating role.

NAV is set to auto-protect; does it do this based on role or does it work for all roles, obvious in some (like administrator) and hidden in others (like my poweruser)?

Given some of the comments in other posts, I gather that Norton is falling into disfavour. A friend of mine detests it and thinks of it as a virus. I have paid for 1 year's worth of protection ending in October, so I am reluctant to ditch it just yet. BUT...

Okay, here's what I would do if I were you. I hate Systemworks, I see Windows installations get shredded by that suite, it is okay for someone's personal system at home to play with, but in the coporate enviornment, it doesn't belong...

1. Login as administrator. Download spybot from Download detection rules updates as well. Scan and remove all spywares. Also uninstall that spynuker thing you got, odds are, it came bundled with spyware.

2. Login as administrator. Uninstall Norton Antivirus, reboot, then uninstall Systemworks. Reboot.

3. Login as administrator. Reinstall Norton, update it. Check things out.

Notice the pattern, clean out all the junk as administrator, then reinstall as administrator. You should only make changes as an administrative equivalent. And if someone steals the laptop, they are either going to format the drive and reinstall Windows, or going to use a floppy disk to reset the password and use Windows.

I have heard that it is almost impossible to completely remove Systemworks. Once I know how I will. Microsoft's defrag and cleandisk have come a long way and that's mostly what I use s/w for.

Why get another spyware? I agree with removal of spywarenuker.

Am I just giving myself extra work and no extra protection by seperating the admin function from operating?

I think so. You can always rename administrator and just use that. Remove systemworks from Add/Remove programs in the control panel. I've never heard of spynuker, but a lot of them contain spyware themselves. Adaware and spybot do not, I prefer spybot.
