I'm running NAV 8.07 on W2K. Everytime the system boots, a process with the image name NAVAPSVC.EXE runs for over 2 hours. CPU usage goes to 100% for the entire time and my system is almost unusable. What is this process, and why does it run at every boot? Can it be disabled (aside from uninstalling NAV)? If it can be disabled, does disabling it create a major security exposure?

Thanks,
Mike

I use NAV 7.6 but I've seen, on occasion, the same thing. Stopping the process and then restarting it corrected the CPU problem.

Does it happen all the time? =============

Yes, everytime the system starts. As recommended in the Symantec knowledge base, I downloaded the latest NAV updates and re-registered NAV. Maybe this will fix it.

Thanks,
Mike

Let's hope the updates help you out. I tried checking the SKB before I replied above, but it was running so slow I timed out when trying to read the articles. Sure were a lot of articles about high CPU useage.

Let me know how you make out. Good Luck. =============

The NAV update and re-registering seems to fix the problem. I have NAV auto-protect enabled and CPU utilization is averaging less than 10%. Big improvement!

For anyone with the same problem: from the NAV main window, click the Live Update menu button and complete the update procedure. After the update completes, reboot, then run the following commands:
Code:
"c:\program files\norton antivirus\navapsvc.exe" /unregserver
"c:\program files\norton antivirus\navapsvc.exe" /service
Then open NAV, click Options, click Auto-Protect, and enable autoprotect. I also needed to set the Norton AntiVirus service to Auto start from the Services applet.

Glad you got it sorted out! =============
