This is both question and useful tip (maybe)
I was unable to retrieve e-mail from my ISP from about 10 days ago. All help from my ISP failed to rectify this problem. Then yesterday, my NAV refused to "Live update", posting an error LU1814 message. I went to the Symantec website, tried all the recommended fixes with no result. I even uninstalled and re-installed my Norton Systrem Works (NSW) twice. I then rang my ISP again, and was informed that the problem was with my NAV. He claimed that they had similar problems from many of their customers using NAV. Being sceptical, I made a gamble, disabled my NAV, and lo and behold, I was able to retrieve my e-mail. I then uninstalled my NSW, installed my earlier 2000 version of NSW with no succes in either e-mail retrieval nor upgrade. I then re-installed my 2003 NSW in "Typical Installation" mode rather in "Full Protection" mode, and thankfully I was able to retrive my e-mail and run "live update" again.
Not being a computer expert, I am not sure where the problem really is, nor whether the re-installation was the panacea, or whether the typical mode saved the day for me.
