native mode and mixed mode in one forest

Could anyone tell me about switching to native mode. I know what is required and I know how to do it, but the question refers to root and child domains.

I have a mixed-mode 2003 root domain (company.net) with no NT4 servers. I have a mixed-mode child domain (uk.company.net) which I need to keep as mixed-mode.

Can I convert the root to native without impacting on the child domain, and can I still attach mixed-mode child domains to a native-mode root domain?

I've done this without any problems, just don't go trying to upgrade the forest level etc.
