I just changed my server configuration not too long ago, last friday. I moved a modem onto the server a dialup modem. I installed the modem as NAT using RRAS services (routing and remote access).
Everything appeared to go as planned, however I notice under NAT in Routing and Remote Access a TOTAL MAPPINGS under the modem connection since it's a dialup. The total mapping numbers keeps increasing and increasing. I've see the the total mappings get as high as 230,000 mappings! I think this is wrong. When it gets that high, I get a POOL error in the event log and the server gets super SLO Then finally TCP/IP stops working, then DNS crashes..and it's all down hill from that...
It looks like when NAT is running with the dialup modem, all my internal client traffic is requesting NAT traffic, and creating "mappings" from internal IP addresses to the outside world using NAT, but the mappings NEVER CLOSE down, they say open. It's like a new port number opens up and never closes. I can sort my mappings by port numbers from port 1 through like port 65,550 is the highest I've seen.
Anyone else seen this problem Or know why the mappings won't release? It's almost like it's a TCP/IP memory leak or an TCP/IP attack. I am 110% sure it's not a virus. I just installed this modem and NAT last friday. I am pretty sure if I shut down the RRAS service in SERVICES, then I don't have the slow down and POOL error, because NAT is not running. Any help would greatfully be apprecaited.
