sorry for the newbie ? but
we just booted up our Dell 725 NAS w/ win2k on it.

Does anyone have a link on how is best to set one up for basic storage ??

We want to install an External DLT VS80 single tape backup unit to it and use Veritas Backup Exec.
is this possible ??

If so, where does the veritas software get loaded on another server ??
i guess we need the basics of how to setup one basically.

thanks gang

You must use the NDMP option and back it up through a backup server.

NDMP option ??
Where/what is that option, through the NAS ??

thanks

NDMP: Network Data Management Protocol.

NDMP is a protocol. Almost all NAS have it as part of the operative system, you must be sure that the protocol is enabled.

Take a look to the box documentation in order to know how to enable it.

Also, take a look to

kool
thanks

btw...
do you/anyone have a "Basic" setup of how to put a NAS
into play ??

I basically plugged it into a switch on our lan, and then
put a SCSI card in it for use w/ a single External DLT drive. I want to install veritas backup exec. on there.

does that make sense ??
thanks

I really wanted to view some visio's or layouts of placing in a network.

also, shouldnt you be able to put in a kvm in it ??
we tried and screen is blank, i can get to it though
from another win XP pro box.

thanks again

Ussualy, you configure the network of the NAS (IP, netmask, gw, etc.) via serial connection and then you manage and configure it through browser. Almost all NAS have a browser-based administration. (test it!). and it does not have (ussualy) a graphic card nor keyboard conenction.

Regarding to backup with NDMP, you *don't* install software IN the NAS, you use NDMP. That's a Veritas configuration. Take a look to:

Cheers.

Thanks appreciate it !!

wonder if there is such for Backup Exec
we already have that.

thanks
