I am doing some work for a school district and have run into a small problem.

The school district has about 950 MB of data they want to backup every night to the local hard drive and then burn the data to CD. Makes sense to me since I don't think 950 MB of data warrants a tape drive.

I am able to make tar create a volume of X size using the -L option. But, when the volume is full, I am prompted to the insert the next media, and I am not given the opportunity to specify a new name for the volume.

Can tar be forced to prompt for a name for the next volume, or do I need to write a script to take care of this?

Thanks in advance for your asistance.

The tarball is one file. It is just being broken up into two sections so it can be saved. Tar will put info in the 1st section so it will know where to look for the rest of the file. To give it two different names, you will have to create to seperate files then give them differnt names. I think.)

That is the same conclusion I have come up with. Thanks for your help.

Looks like I will be writing a script to take care of the problem.

Thanks again for your help.
