How to name win2k domain - I know it's been talked about to death here. What complications do you forsee with adding ".hq" to our current domains. Some more info:

We have 3 NT domains. If I start with the parent company and change from "domain1" to "domain1.hq", can I similiarly name the remaining domanis to "domain2.hq" and "domain3.hq"?

The idea is that I would have domains not necessarily dependent on each other, but able to share resources, and that have a decent naming convention. Would I be able to upgrade in-place from the current NT PDC or would I have to start new and recreate accounts - every domain has its own exchange 5.5 server.

thanks in advance. joe.

As far as I know, you cannot rename Windows 2000 domains. Confirmation lies in the fact that the menu is greyed out.

However you can rename domains and servers in Windows Server 2003

I thought when you upgrade the NT PDC, it asks what you'd like to name the new domain for DNS purposes.

For testing, I just installed an NT BDC on my active domain, removed from network, promoted to PDC, upgraded to Win2k, and it immediatedly asks for the new forest, tree, domain name. I was able to put "domain1.hq". Then it follows by setting up DNS to match this.

If this works in the real enviornment, what else do I need to keep in mind? I'm worried about exchange5.5, but this is probably the wrong forum.

Thanks.
