I've got a RH7.2 box that cannot resolve names via DNS although if it will resolve through the hosts file. A nameserver=w.x.y.z entry pointing to my DNS server is already configured under the /etc/resolv.conf file

What happens if you try?
Can you ping the nameserver?

Try 'dig @nameserver-ip-address -t a some.host.name'

I can ping the nameserver by IP. As a matter of fact, I can ping anything by IP! If I try to ping by name, I'll get a host unknown error.

The Box is at the office, I'll try the dig thing tomorrow when I'm there. Thanks

Check the config of /etc/nsswitch.conf which handles how lookup requests should be processed.

Thanks miblo,

Strangely enough, all entries in my nsswitch.conf file was changed to "files nisplus". After changing "hosts: files dns" and "networks: files dns", everything works again.
