We run a Novel 5.0 domain with NT4 and NT5 workstations. We want to eliminate an off-site WINS server because of WAN traffic congestion.

Is there any way to host WINS on Novell? I've looked at NDS4NT and it doesn't really fit, as we have no NT domains.

Or am I going to have to <shudder> work up an NT server just to do WINS?

You gunna have to work up an NT server just to do WINS.

BTW, is there any particular reason you needs WINS in the first place?

We need WINS to connect to shares in off-site NT domains. And so our cheesy Access front-ends can find the SQL servers. I don't want to build that many LMHosts files.

I could convert our domain to pure DNS but it would require upgrading many printers and retraining users. No money, no time...

My solution would be the LMHOSTS file, but I would use ZENWorks to distribute it. NetWare 5 came with ZENLite, that has NAL that would allow me to shove the file down the workstations throat. I would also be able to update it anytime I wanted to.

ZEMLight = ZEN2.0, you will have issues with Win2K, but it fixable, but not very fun.

To get ZEN4 (or the upcomming ZEN6) would cost some ducketts, so you may just be stuck with the WINS server until you budget allows for workstation mamangment software.

Check out the ZEN anyway, you can get demo copies to play with. It does save a lot of time and sanity dealling with workstations
