Hey,
I have a dumb question. I would like to add my RedHat machine to my "network". I have a wireless router connecting me to the internet with a laptop, a desktop, a handheld device connecting to it. I want to add my Linux box so I can update Perl Tk and some other stuff. For the sake of continuity I would like to assign the RedHat box a thematic name, give it an IP address in the 192.168.1.X region, and give it the standard 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. I know there is a tool for this...but I would really like to get some specific instructions. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

You don't say what version of redhat you are using but, up to and including 7.1, you should be able to do this from linuxconf - run '/sbin/linuxconf' as root ( However, if you have 7.2 see this -->
Even easier in some ways is to directly edit the config files. These are at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and are named ifcfg-xxxx where xxxx is the interface concerned. So, eth0 (first ethernet card) would be /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

The hostname is defined in the /etc/sysconfig/network file .

Restart the network after any changes (as root) :

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

Hope this helps
