i have a text object which contains name & address etc. and suppresses blank lines and a field that prints immediately after the text object.

i've selected "can grow" but it maintains the full height of the text object even if not all of the lines are used. i was hoping that the text object would be only as high as the lines used. the field immediately following the text object prints on the line following the the full height of the text object, so if not all of the name and address fields are used, there's a big gap between the last line in the text object and the next field.

is there any way around this? I shrunk the text object to a few lines and put the next field right after it, but of course if all of the lines are used, the next field prints in the middle of the text object.

is there a way to have the text object only the height of the lines used so that there's no gap between the last line used in the text box and the field following it?

thanks

Add the field as the final line in the text box. Also select the text box->right click->format text->check "suppress embedded field blank lines".

thanks LB

actually, that's the way it was originally and of course that worked fine, no gap, but the problem is, that the final line is the website address and from what i understand, to be an active link, it needs to be a separate field containing only the website address, and the same for the email address - which is my next step.

thanks again, i look forward to any suggestions that you offer.

Okay, then add the link below the text box, and format the section to "relative positions" in the section expert.

thanks LB.

alas, unless i'm doing something wrong, that doesn't seem to work.

there are seven lines of contact name and address and if i make the text object smaller and select "can grow", the text object does grow to include all and only the lines of name and address, but if i position the link fields snug up to the text object, when the text object grows, the link fields stay in the same position and are overwritten by the n & a lines.

is there another setting i need to select to make this function? it woul be so ideal if i could make this work.

thx

Just tested, and it doesn't seem to work with a field below the text box. Maybe they have to be objects.

Instead, insert a section_b and place the link there. Leave the text in section_a, and in design mode, leave the section one line in height, format the text box to can grow.

Split the section in two and place web link in lower part. As text box grows so will its section pushing new section holding web link down.

AH! thanks LB & Ian

that does indeed work! if i worked more with cr - cr is actually only a small but oh so important and the best - part of my job, perhaps i would become more versed and manipulating data on reports via sections etc. would become engrained and come to me more quickly.

as it is, i'm lucky to have people like you who are soooo helpful and so willing to spend time helping. KUDOS to you both; i don't know what i'd do without you.

many, many thanks.
