We've got NAM (NT5B75BB 11/28/95 vintage) running NVM 1.1 (2 ports). We have only 12 users on the system. Can we add more memory to the NAM and upgrade the software to NVM 4.0 or do we have to purchase a new NAM?

At the same time, we're planning to upgrade our MICS from T1 Rel 1.1 to Rel 5.0. Other having to purchase a new software cartridge and the new software and reconfiguring our system from square 1, are there any other nasty surprises waiting for us - you know like, oops the RAD needs to be replaced with a fast RAD, etc.?

Thanks

The NAM can be a bit tricky with memory and hardware requirements. I would suggest just purchasing a new one if that is an option.

The MICS upgrade is easier. You can use an upgrade tool to save your programming when going from R1T1 to 5.0. Just make sure that if you currently have XC software that you use a XC upgrade tool. It's fairly easy and no programming is always nice. The other things to look for are: What voicemail are you running and is that release compatible? Send me your email addy and I can send you the software compatibility matrix... and yes you need to use a FastRad instead of a regular RAD.

Just take a look at the compatibility chart to see whether or not you have any other conflicts. MRoberts

I've been successful in upgrading lower release NAMs to R4, but as Melissa stated it can be quite tricky. RAM memory must be upgraded, most likely a larger hard drive must be installed, and the correct drivers for your particular model NAM must be installed. NAMs use the OS/2 Warp operating system which is a very different animal from DOS/Windows. Brian Cox

The RAM thing isn't too bad, the hardest part is the hard drive differences for the really old ones. I've only done the 2.12's and up - I've never seen one that old.

If you get a new one, you won't have to hassle with buying the hardware, CD and installing - you can always get one new or refurbished with a warranty. -= Beer is food! Is it suppertime? =-

I actually was successful in upgrading a R 0.95 (yes, 0.95!)up to a R4. As you said the RAM upgrade is not a big deal. These older NAMs will only take a 540MB hard drive, which is the minimum needed for R4. Cost for the upgrade will run about $500 which is cheaper than buying another NAM. You won't have the full 100 hours of storage with this size hard drive, but in this case it will provide more than enough storage time for 12 users. Brian Cox
