hey all,

this probably is not the correct forum, but somebody here probably installed it.

Any one have in depth knowledge of basic administration in regards to adding new hosts and delegating specific services to be monitored.

I have it installed, it is configured, not in the minimal configuration, but the big config. All I have to monitor is ping, http and hard drives for now. I set up the ping monitoring, but am still wondering about the syntax for the others in regard to the checkcommands.cfg and services.cfg

thanks

I tried using Nagios once, but it was a beast to mess with. I went back to using Big Brother instead which does the above checks standard and is easy to use.

Coffeysm,

you are right, configuring Nagios was no joke. I actually was able to configure Nagios and add the clients to be monitored using the nrpe add-on. It took a while, lots of trial and error, mainly error.[ponder] Being freeware, it seems like every other server I attempted to add gave its own set of issues. As of now I am running the Nagios server on Red Hat, it is monitoring Linux and Solaris box. Right now I am mainly checking the disks, ping, load, as needed I can add other checks. The only issue I am still having though is we have 2 Solaris 10 boxes, currently those are the only 2 boxes I can not get to work, I can not get the nrpe client to start, I hope it is compatible with Solaris 10. I can get it to work using ssh instead, but I would prefer to use the nrpe client.

I want to try to configure Big Brother some time, my previous employer tended to use it, but I was never able to get the chance to configure a new instance.

at my last job we used nagios for monitoring. The nagios Server admin was not very happy installing it on Solaris, he suggested to use Linux (you get almost everything as a rpm but not aus a Sun pkg).

For monitoring my services/devices/etc I used nrpe Plugins or wrote my own.

Best Regards, Franz
