can someone please give me a quick brief on a mksysb restore.
can I restore the system say like windows by booting and installing from a mksysb tape and how would i do this would this be done through maintance mode.
you cannot restore a mksysb on a windows platform , only
AIX .
It depends on what type of IBM machine you have , and which IBM machine you want to restore your mksysb onto.
For example if you have an IBM p660 and want to install mksysb onto IBM p640 , depending on what version of operating system that was installed on the p660 when you made your mksysb , ( e.g. AIX 4.3.3) you would boot your p640 from the first CD of the Install CD's and you'll get an option to restore from backup , select this , load your tape, select your disk and away you go. You can change the
bootlist to be tape cd0 hdisk0 hdisk1
the question I was asking was whether like windows aix can simply boot from tape and run a mksysb restore judging by the answer this is no and u have to enter maintanace mode first before an attempt to restore mysysb is carried out.
If you created a bootable Mksysb you can boot off the tape, cd or dvd whichever type of medium you have created the mksysb on...
#mksysb -p /dev/rmt0
-p turns off packing, I have found alot of times people encounter unpacking errors when they are trying to restore their mksysb, the -p will eliminate that.
If you are trying to load the mksysb to a different class server like from a H70 series to a P660 you should do whats known as a clone procedure where you boot off of the base cd of the AIX level you are at, then you would install from backup..
