Mysteries Incoming Bandwidth Use.

I’m on an always on DSL connection and I have recently changed ISP. I am now being billed for the amount of downloads I make (Lame… I know) anyway.. Due to this I have downloaded a program called DU Meter which looks quite good.

The problem is that whilst checking the logs I am noticing that the total amount of downloads I’m making is way over what I know I’m downloading. I do have IMesh up but the stuff I’m trying to download are still queued. I also closed MSN since I thought that this was generating this traffic.

My questions is… What might be causing this incoming traffic? Is there a way to check which particular program is using this bandwidth?

How are you determining this? I haven't used DU Meter, so I'm guessing that you are seeing bytes received or something. How much is "way over" - 10 to 15%? TCP/IP always has some overhead beyond the amount of data actually transferred. Also don't forget that a megabyte is 1024 bytes.

Well.. I browsed a few pages and had IMesh on for some time (without getting anything) and the download total (from the logs) amounted to around 9 MB for around 2 hours online. I'm keeping an eye on things here since I'm still a bit confused.

I still want to know if there is any software out there that can monitor the usage per program.

Have you tried ZoneAlarm Pro to see what applications or IP address numbers (

http://www.xxx.yyy.zzz)

are trying to download (or upload) to your PC?

Have you tried all of the major online scan engines - Trend online, Panda online, Bitdefender online, etc? Maybe you have a virus?

Why are you file sharing? I would not recommend this to anybody. "I do have IMesh up but the stuff I’m trying to download are still queued." Just get legit music and programs for your PC.

Don't use an important PC for experiments on the Internet. Use Virtual PC which allows you to zap (kill or delete) the Virtual PC on your PC in case of problems. See the latest Microsoft Action Pack for details.

Just a question: "whilst checking the logs" do you mean while checking the logs? What does whilst mean?

I have used DU Meter for several years... also find it very accurate... recently I was shown a program called
Etherdetect..(does very nice things for you. you can download and test... before you have to buy.... first I'd run every trojan, virus, adware scanner I have find.... that would be my first thought your infected....there are many which are FREE and do very well....google will help there also.
