mysql windows installation

I'm trying to install mysQl on my home computer (win2k 3rd service pack)

Having downloaded the most recent stable release (mysql-3.23.38) I extracted the zip and got down to business

I've edited the path variable and written my.inf (when starting mysQLmanager.exe the start check comes back ok)

However when I try to start the service (start/programs/adminstrative/services/mysQl) it won't have it reporting

Could not start the mysQl saervice on local computer.
Error 1067 : The process terminated unexpectedly

typing mysQl in command promtp gives

ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

net start mysQl at prompt gives me the 1067 error

system log gives me nothing

I'm at a bit of a loss here :/

I can reproduce your errmsg (Win98, mySQL 3.23)when I stop my mySQLAdmin server, and attempt to start mySQL. Start winmySQLAdmin server first. Takes a few moments. Might as well also recheck your winmySQLAdmin, my.ini and myODBC drivers configurations, just to get off on the right track.

I start mySQLAdmin with the machine, but I manually start mySQL, as needed, with shortcut: c:\mysql\bin\mysql.exe
